You’re Doing It Wrong

A week or so ago I had a boy on the brink.  His brother had been fawned over and doted upon because of some stupid collarbone thing that could not be that bad as it did not even require anything cool like a cast.  Enough was enough so we took a mental health day.  He got to choose.  Anywhere he wanted.  And he chose the University of Kansas’s Natural History Museum which holds all things to ignite a boy’s imagination and soothe his soul.  Taxidermy, fossils and live critters all reside under its roof.  Boy heaven.

We had a great time.  No rushing.  His only frustration was my occasional lingering.  Puzzled, he came to see.  “What?”  “Look.  These signs are different; they’re much older than the others.  Really look.  Someone hand lettered these signs and drew the pictures themselves.  No computer.  No font style.  No laser printer.”

He’s an artist by nature so it did give him pause.  “Mom.  We’re supposed to be looking at the snakes.”

  1. It’s never too early to get those boys familiar with campus, you’re a good mom Mrs. B. Rock Chalk!

  2. “You’re doing it wrong” Oh, those immortal words from Mr. Mom!

Sounds like a wonderful day and perhaps just what the doctor ordered (and those signs do look amazing!)

  3. Part of the “treat” was that the brothers did not get to go; they all love it. We usually eat at the Wheel, then mom is happy, too.

  4. Courtney – We had a great time and I do think it helped to set things right. You can only live with your brother in the limelight for so long.

  5. Oh, you are a good mother too.
The ability to recognize the brink of a melt down and stave it off with a field trip. The teen age years require a little more than that. Brace yourself.

  6. You make me long for years past when my son was younger. He has now traded snakes for girls! LOL

  7. it does have a great snake exhibit! I love these old palcards.the type face is so great and vintage.

All the times that I stood and read the last one, I don’t think I ever quite knew where it was exactly. Now, it’s where I take my own girls when we need a mental health day, the la brea tar pits.

  8. cute , very cute.

you know…..i just posted about my child as well.

do you think it is the holidays ?

….i just spent the morning polishing silver because my daughter is coming home for Thanksgiving with a girlfriend,
i just want everything to look beautiful.

  9. Patricia – I’m not sure it fixed it exactly, but at least he knew I was paying attention. I’m only one year away from my first official teenager. Yikes.

  10. Megan – I knew you would have noticed these. I think they are amazing. I’m terrified that some enterprising coed will say one day, “Look, I made new signs for those exhibits.” and these will wind up behind the Union in a dumpster. Instead of framed in my office where they belong. I had no idea the tar pits would be a girl spot. Just shows what I know.

  11. great post – darling as usual.
my”boy” husband collects fossils and rocks and crystal. his office is amazing.

  12. Happy Thanksgiving Patricia. I hope this holiday season at the Blandings’ will be completely injury free and healthy!
