No Hillbilly He

Come and listen to a story about a store named JED
A chic antiquer, barely keeps his passion fed.

Each and every day he is rounding up some loot
You want so much it will make you say, “shoot.”

Basalt that is, black gold, for your tea.

Well, the next thing you know ol’ JED’s breaking into song
You’re so giddy you want to sing along.

In Sag Harbor this is where you ought to be
I’m loading up the truck so don’t get in front of me.

Hamptons, that is.
Beachy feel, sky full of stars.

Y’all come back now, y’hear?

Jack Deamer owns a dreamy little spot in Sag Harbor. His space can barely contain his finds or his personality. He did, indeed, break into a (very good) chorus of “She Works Hard for the Money,” while checking on a price. Jack likes to sell pieces as a collection – like the basalt and jasperware and the silhouettes. This set of English stoneware had me mesmerized; it is sitting on a chair, one of a pair, from the Doris Duke estate.

  1. Jean – completely mutual. And, I'll be up half the night trying to figure out how you are going to get the cat hair off the mohair.

  2. Looks like tough, exhausting work Patricia. I'll get Grannie to russle up some crawdads, jackrabbit pie, possum stew, grits & boiled buzzard eggs. That should do the trick nicely.
    Millie ^_^

  3. Stop it, y'all -I suddenly want another child named Jed, or Jethro and something from that shop. Call me Granny.

  4. Very creative! I live on Long Island, too. Maybe one nice Fall day I'll have to visit JED. Oh, and thank you, I'm going to have that theme song running through my head all morning now! : )

  5. Oh, I love those two yellow silk french chairs- they'd go great in my living room…..too bad I need to get our house painted- they cost the same!

  6. The colour combination of that plate in the final photograph is terrifically beautiful. Reminds me of a room I once saw decorated by Bruno de Caumont: pale grey, black, white, and orange.

  7. I have noticed that lately you have turned into a walking commercial. We so love the family posts. Please don't stop sharing that slice of life with us. I don't mean to be rude but I miss the old you!!!

  8. The shop is terrific, but the owner is the star of the show. Courtney and Aesthete – I'm haunted by it still.

Anon – I'll see if I can make them do something charming over the weekend.

  9. I think there should be some kind of national preservation project to record the inner workings if AAL's brain. It, and he, are a national treasure. Like the juxtaposition of AAL's sighing remembrance to tune of the the Beverly Hillbillies.

  10. You are so clever with your posts! I love that store, everything in it and your song!

  11. SUCH an amazing store and we LOVED going there with you, Bill and the gang! Can't wait to see you in December!

  12. I absolutely loved this post!! As you can see my blog is "Hillbilly Debutante: Musings of A Country Girl Stuck in the City", or better described as an Ozark hillbilly country girl struggling to fall in love with Washington, DC.'

Love your blog and just goes to prove that not everyone from Missouri is a hillbilly. You definitely are NOT. (Not that there is anything wrong with being one)
