Tradition

“It is essential to know how to use volume, how to manipulate the space at your disposal.

A certain rhythm is necessary, a sense of balance,

an understanding of color.

I think a designer should know as much as possible about everything that has been made in the world, and about everything that is being made today.

Not that there is any question of copying someone else’s work, but a certain familiarity with all aspects of design and its history is basic.  This knowledge gives the designer a confidence that allows him to achieve a result so harmonious that it seems spontaneous and natural.”  Paco Munoz Cabrero
All images Munoz’s own home in Madrid, Architectural Digest Traditional Interiors, published 1979.  Photography, Jose Luis Perez.  And, yes, trellis.  I couldn’t resist.

  2. Well – I have to add that today you should not only know your work and profession but what I miss more often – the more money is involved – is the lack of ethic. All interior designers and decorators should refrain from USING any materials which originate from endangered species, be it animal or plant. There are so many fantastic modern materials available today that there is no necessity at all to use any from any living creatures only to please an oversized ego.

  3. trellis on the floor is always nice. less of a commitment than the wall…

  4. Trellis love! And, I see some Shibui here, too. Perfection = Cabrero, wow! ; )

  5. Exquisite!! And so true – learning from history is essential in every discipline!! And of course adore the trellis!!

  6. Amazing. I lived in Spain when this was published. Why don't we hear about this fantastic artist more often? The drama, the breadth of scope–this guy is timeless. Thanks, Mary
Note to Restoration Hardware:–you can't copy this!

  7. Hi Patricia, I've been studying these images, again and again and again. This Spaniard has perfectly interpreted the Spanish soul: Fire and Ice; Goya, Velazquez, modern and perfectly rooted in the past. I'm still in heaven. Mary

  8. Is it me? Is it me? Am I the Madelyn listed in the winners roll?
    Oh I hope so!!

  9. It's almost unbelievable to think these rooms were created over 30 years ago… they're still so fresh and modern. Love the black marble obelisks against that red wall…

  10. One of my all-time favorite homes featured in those old AD books! I agree completely with Cabrero.

  11. Actually, the designer is known as "Paco Muñoz", not "Paco Cabrero" as Cabrero is his mother's name. More examples of his work can be seen at the web site of his design business/shop: casayjardin.es. (If you don't speak Spanish, go to "Arquitectura y Decoración" and then "Residencias privadas" to see some of his residential interiors.
