Idol Worship

I have an issue with my mailman.  Or I have no issues with my mailman, depending on how you look at it.  I think that I have mentioned before the rarity of my big mail delivery.  Perhaps he feels this 1950 ranch should have 1950-size mail; for most days letter size is my only prize.  About once a week my mail slot is crammed, stuffed, smushed with catalogues and magazines.  Except for February’s.  No February magazines at all.

So I bought them.  (This annoys Bill and when they eventually arrive he will say, sadly lifting them from the kitchen island, “Oh.  That’s too bad.”  It’s as if he thinks they have died in vain.)  Worth the double dip as I found Claire Weiss awaiting me on the pages of AD in that remarkable vintage Azzedine Alaia dress.  And those pearls.  In front of that mural.

Speechless.

The Cartier pearls are “the only jewelry she wears.”  (They rest atop vintage Fornasetti trays, which is, well, perfect.)  The grandness of this overwhelms me.  It is the kind of thing that I would proclaim and then find myself a week later mouthing “liar” in the mirror.  Still, I wish I were a little more Weiss-like. Read the whole article here.

Images, Architectural Digest, February 2012; architecture, Steven Harris; design, Lucian Rees Roberts; photography, Thomas Loof; produced by Robert Rufino and the balance of the number of small object in the piece is nothing short of miraculous.

  1. This was very chic. Chic, chic, chic! This woman has style oozing out of every pore.

  2. We always thought that our mailman saved the magazines and catalogs and then the alternate had a big pile to deliver on his day. The more you get, the more they squish it up or rip it.

Stunning picture of the black gown.

  3. I too always admire people who can adopt a sort of uniform (especially such a chic one) but I'm too scatterbrained myself and find myself wanting to many things!

  4. Patricia-

    This is wonderful.
A woman of spirit and style.
It's perfect that her refined taste is leavened with wit and a touch of acerbity.

As to your mail situation. I long ago stopped subscribing (except for The New Yorker, and New York mag and a few others) as invariably the second I saw them at the magazine shop I had to buy them…rather than wait..and wait…for them to turn up.
    Cheers…this woman is a dynamo.

  5. So very chic dahhling.. to wear two strands of different color pearls, would had not occurred to me!

  6. I don't think you can have TOO MANY issues of AD, can you????
I only buy off the rack now too… I don't like what the mail does to those beautiful issues of 'dreams'

  7. Sigh. Fab. She can wear the ginormous pearls because she is gorgeous and has a neck like a swan. I wish… Even if I could afford them, they would look like they were up around my ears.

  8. USPS – It's a shame how the service level has gone into the toilet. I have to keep a spreadsheet of subscriptions so I can tell when to report things as missing before the extra issues are all gone. The USPS doesn't seem to care, and to tell the truth, neither do the publishers.
