Don’t Look Down

I got my haircut on Friday. As each Blandings boy piled into the car he said some variation of, “Oh, you got your hair cut.” Which is, for boys, pretty impressive. After Mr. Blandings had been home for a couple of hours, with no hair-related comment, I put my hand of my hip and tilted my head to the left. “What?” “I got my hair cut.” You might think this bid for attention a bit desperate, but I don’t have a lot of moments in my life. I’m not going to get the big promotion. I’m not going to be on the cover of a magazine. Oprah is not calling me. Sometimes getting my hair cut is the best thing that happens to me all week next to not getting thrown up on.

His response? “Oh, I didn’t know if you got your haircut or if it was static-y.” At least it made me laugh.

Sometimes his level of attention to detail works to my advantage. I can sneak something in, a vase, a pair of candlesticks, earrings, and it can take a while for him to notice. Then, when he asks, “Is that new?” I can honestly reply, “Sweetie, I’ve had this forever.”

So, I’m taking bets. How long do you think it will take for him to notice the antelope carpet I’ve ordered for the office? Office chair took two days. I’m not kidding. This is not blog-fodder, this is my life.

  1. Those super-shiny Todd Romano walls are amazing. I’ve always been frightened of shiny walls … the glamour really is too much for me, I think … though if I could have walls like that, I might change my mind. They have depth, as opposed to merely surface shine.

  2. hee hee hee…I love it. My husband is the same. Although I’m pretty sure he’d notice a new carpet straight away. He is getting better at it…

  3. omg – I positively LOVE this carpet!!! Patricia and I were fawning over Jan Shower’s office. And I just got a client to order this for her son’s townhouse. love, love, love it!! Your office is going to be so wonderful.

ok – my husband is exactly the same. He never notices anything. same response – this thing? Its not new? He’s on to me now and goes, what – how old, one or two weeks? hahaha!!!

great post!! can’t wait to see the pictures of the office.

  4. Aesthete! Where have you been darling? We were just about to send out the cyber dogs. I need to check, but hope you are blogging now or soon. That Romano room has everything right. Give shiny a try!

  5. Suzy – I think the smell will tip him off, but it’s not between the door and the kitchen – could still take an hour or two.

  6. Joni – don’t you think that will be me someday? The son’s townhouse? Trying to convince someone who wants beer posters and Ansel Adams that the antelope carpet is “so chic?” Maybe they will be like their dad and I can just do it and no one will notice.

  7. consider yourself lucky – on my side he notices EVERYTHING – which means I rarely get away with ANYTHING -and we don’t even live together yet!

  8. LOVE that x-base desk in Jan Showers office. Gorgeous carpet! Let’s hope he doesn’t read this post, it would pretty much let the cat out of the bag.

  9. This carpet has been on my mind lately and here you and Joni are using it. We Bloggers certainly do seen to run in the same circle. Please post a picture of your husband’s office when the carpet is installed….he can’t help but notice it.

  10. Ah! Wish I had that kind of latitude — I have the opposite problem — DH zeroes in on changes here at Rosemary Cottage. “Hmmmm …. is that NEW? My response: “Define “NEW!”” LOL!!

  11. Another of your most clever posts! I’ve had a busy day and this made me smile. Also, I’m jealous. Love the pattern.

  12. London, Patricia and Jan – oh, no, I’ve already TOLD him. Showed him the sample, made him look at it on the floor. Told him when I ordered it. None of that will register once it’s delivered. But ask him the score of a KU game 12 years ago? That, he retains.

  13. Must…have…the chinois pattern chair in the romano room…do you think holding my breath until valentine’s day and dropping major hints will have any effect? hmmm…experience suggests no dice…Love, love the “none of that will register when he sees it” comment. So familiar here too. But you have to substitute Notre Dame for KU. So you see it’s really totally different 😉

  14. Having to point things out is better than having to hide them, I am sure. Looking forward to seeing your fantastic new carpet, as well as your other projects in-the-works.

  15. This was a great post. Esp the last line.

I do not read your blog frequently enough. Shame on me, look what I have been missing.
